Burren Girl
Earlier this year, I composed for Rita Davern and Melody Gilbert's film Stories I Didn't Know, about the struggle between the Dakota people and Irish immigrants moving to Minnesota.
But Rita wasn't finished with her story. She still had years of footage from her trips to Ireland, searching for her family's roots, and finding out why they moved to America. That's what her follow up documentary Burren Girl is all about.
I was pleased to work with Rita again. This time around, I acted more as music supervisor and editor, helping find existing Irish songs and gluing them together with custom composition.
Stories I Didn’t Know
I recently scored the feature documentary Stories I Didn't Know. It's a heartfelt journey of Irish-American woman Rita Davern coming to terms with her ancestors buying land that was sacred to the Dakota people of Minnesota.
On TV in Duluth
Karen Sunderman and Steve Ash at WDSE WRPT / Duluth PBS made a really nice segment about my film scoring process, and it's airing on TV tonight!
Scoring Workshop with Live Orchestra – Catalyst 2019
I was asked to lead a workshop on film composing at Catalyst Content Festival in Duluth. We were able to bring musicians from the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra to perform the scores, giving the audience an idea of what a live orchestral scoring session is like.
Emmy Nomination for “Beneath the Ink”
Beneath the Ink was nominated for Outstanding Short Documentary in the 2019 News and Documentary Emmy Awards. I co-composed the score with Stephen Letnes, and it's been a wild ride seeing where Cy Dodson's film has gone and all the awards it's been getting.
“Silicone Soul” on STARZ
The STARZ network has picked up Silicone Soul, Melody Gilbert's documentary I scored last year. The film follows people who've fallen in love, and even married, their life-sized silicone dolls.
“Love Them First” Tours the South
Love Them First: Lessons From Lucy Laney Elementary, the Kare 11 documentary I scored, had a great run at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Film Fest. It won Best Minnesota Made Documentary and sold out more screenings than any film in the festival's history.
Under the Mushroom Cloud
I attend a monthly documentary club in the Twin Cities, where directors screen their works-in-progress. When Kyle Whitney shared his footage of interviews with nuclear bomb survivors in Japan, my jaw dropped at these stories he captured.
Silicone Soul Soundtrack
I recently scored an intriguing documentary by prolific director Melody Gilbert, called Silicone Soul. It features people (mostly men) who develop relationships with their life-size silicone dolls. It's one that will likely make you uncomfortable at first, but by the end you may have more empathy for the subjects than you might expect.
